Books, books and more books!

CJ from Above the river mentioned in a comment earlier, that she would like to browse through my bookshelves.  So I figured I'd do a post on books. We love to read and have quite a number of books throughout the house.  When our children were small we had even more as I have never felt that you can have too many!

Here is a peek at some of them.

My sewing books which I make good use of'

Some classics

craft and home books

Good old Harry Potter - some of my favourite children's fiction!

The bookcase in our guestroom which houses,

More classics

Poetry and historical

My collection of Miss Read

and Rosamunde Pilcher

Currently on my bedside table as mentioned yesterday

Our living room bookcase

CS Lewis collection and reference books

And of course, the children's books

In the playroom

I love books and can't imagine a home without them. I am very picky about what I read though.  I don't use bad language and therefore don't like to read it in my books.  This is getting harder, which is why I stick with the classics and some old standbys which I will read over and over again.  I must admit to liking British authors above others (slightly biased there!) I also have a Kobo reader and have quite a lot of books on that.  I love the convenience for travel and sometimes in bed I will read from it, but nothing beats holding a real book in my hands. I love the feel and the smell of books. I could get lost in a used bookstore for hours.  Our middle son Andrew is exactly the same way.  Whenever we would go on vacation he would always want to spend lots of time in bookstores, much to the chagrin of the others!

Beef & vegetable stew for dinner tonight and leftovers in the freezer.  Love winter comfort food!

  1. Too spooky Julie!! 1. we have lots of the exact same books as each other!! In all sorts of categories! 2. Just before the picture with the Miss Read books I thought, I wonder if Julie has ready any Miss Read, she would probably like her books, I will suggest them to her, then I scrolled down, and there you were, showing your Miss Read books!!!! I have practically all of her books collected over many decades, I only have a couple missing. They are some of my favourite books ever! We obviously have similar tastes! Lovely to see your bookshelves. xx

  2. You're up late Amy! Sounds like we are kindred spirits! I don't have all the Miss Read books, and I haven't even read all the ones I have yet, but I do enjoy them. They tell of simple times and I'm all for that. Do you enjoy Rosamunde Pilcher? I love her books and re-read them again and again. Winter Solstice, her last book, is by far her best in my opinion. Wendell read it at my suggestion and now reads it every Christmas like I do! xx

  3. Thanks for sharing those, I agree that a house isn't right unless it has books in it. I love looking at other peoples' books - when I visit someone's house for the first time I have a terrible habit of getting drawn to their bookshelves and seeing what they have. I wish my own shelves wre that organised. I start off with good intentions but it never lasts - plus a I have a possible librarian in training in the form of my 2 year old, who likes taking them down and looking at them, then putting them back in different places!

    1. I understand your dilemma in wanting to check out people's books. They say you can tell a lot about a person from the books they own! I would think music is a close second as well. I love browsing through books and I remember the days when I had my own little "librarians". But if she's developing a love of books then it's a good thing! When our granddaughter comes over she knows where "her" books are now and actually is good at leaving the rest alone.

  4. Heaven! Thanks for the mention, and thanks for the look round your bookshelves. There are so many wonderful things there, you have excellent taste. The sewing books look fantastic, and we have lots of books in common. Plus there are a few things I'd like to try, you've given me a few ideas. I've really enjoyed this post so much. Books are really important in this house too, everyone loves them, and we never seem to have quite enough shelf space!

    1. So glad you enjoyed the post CJ - I thought you would. Like I wrote in the previous post, they say that you can tell a lot about someone from the books they own. If you have any good suggestions, I'm always open to new ones!

  5. It's nice to see all your books. We have a lot of books in our house too. Every couple of years we weed through and get rid of some, but we always seem to accumulate just as many right away. :)

  6. Loved seeing all your books Julie. We are bookworms here too but I tend not to hang on to all the books we read or we would have been taken over by them. Both of us have favourites that we would never part with.We love second hand book stores too and I get lots of my 'light reading' from charity shops for a few pennies and once read, they go back again. I admit to having a few craft books and I love anything to do with Christmas and of course the Ladybird ones. The very old ones that my dad won at Sunday school are treasured as is my maternal grandad's Bible which went every where with him when he was in the army (over 20 years around the turn of 1900's). I still dont have a Kindle and nor am I bothered about one really. Tony occasionally downloads books to the Ipad but I love a real book!!

  7. Ooh you like Miss Read, she's sooooo lovely to read isn't she, I've read all her books and now have them all on Audio so I can (read) listen to them whilst stitching, crocheting or quilting. Loved reading your blog, the beef stew looks very tempting Mr B's favourite meal :)

  8. What a lovely post I love all your books. I too and book mad and cant bear to part with any. I collect cookbooks and crochet books and have such a large collection. My resolution is to give away a few books to charity but sometimes I think others might not take care of them as much as I do. I know that is a silly notion but I love books so much, however having read your post it is good to know there are others who adore books too

    1. I did go through my cookbooks recently, but I still have a few. I forgot to add those to my book photos. Maybe I will add them to my next post. I had a part time job in a used bookstore a while back and I loved it - like working in a candy store!!
